Looking back on last winter's photos I found out I never posted many of them here, in particular the many photos from my Boxing Day walks. After visiting Beccles I travelled to Oulton Broad, part of the Suffolk broads which works it's way to the sea at Lowestoft. Only a mile or two from the busy coast the broad was still, covered with thick ice and the only noise that of water birds.

I started off walking up in to the isolated reed beds and the old houseboats. The houseboats were empty and one had succumbed to the water, listing sharply to one side. Along the water's edge were old mooring points where the aged wood formed seemingly random and impractical shapes. At many points the ice was very think, with the birds making their way precariously around the frozen detritus.

After the busy last few weeks I've finally had a chance to go back through months and months of photos all of which have sat on my laptop or in a drawer. Some of these photos have been taken recently and some go back as far as last autumn! Time to get some of those older photos up here, mixed up with new photo posts.

This set of photos are the second part from a day I spent out with my camera up in Suffolk over the Christmas period, Boxing Day to be precise. The day started off leaving Southwold and visiting the small village of Uggeshall (you can see the photos here) and I then drove up to Beccles, a beautiful little town on the river. The day had a clear blue sky for much of it but it was during that time when it was very, very cold...so cold that the river had frozen over and swans were walking from one side to the other! I walked around the boats and through to the far side of the water before having to quickly (as much as you can on icy paths) walk back to the warm car. From here I drove over to Lowestoft.

When I first moved to Portsmouth back in 1995 I lived in the student halls just off Locksway Road and I've always been really interested in the old canal, which is now all but erased from the map. After walking south past the halls I watched the wader birds feeding between the circles of ice and boats covered in snow. From there it was a short walk to the boat club and the old canal lock. The last remains of the canal are the sea lock walls, that are now home to a small marina of little boats. Within the lock the ice was thick and jostled in the water with the hulls.

Over the little bridge and on to the shore beach I was back at the wreak of an old boat, something I've taken photos of many times. The wreak is submerged during high tide and is slowly being eaten away. Due to luck more than timing the hull skeleton was under a layer of snow, the water left from the last tide a layer of ice.

I do love going out first thing in the morning with my camera and catching the beach and sea as the sun comes up, even in winter. You can't beat an empty beach. Last weekend I borrowed a Canon 60D with a 50mm lens from a friend and decided to do something different and film some HD footage. Filming with digital SLRs in the last year or so has become very popular as you can use still camera lenses to get some interesting effects like very short depth of field, particularly with manual focus. Over this last year as part of my new job I've been learning more and more about film and production so it was also good to try out some filming techniques like focus pulls and throws and follow focus, all relatively easy to experiment with a D-SLR.

This first dawn observations edit is made up from my walk around and under South Parade Pier in Southsea and was shot in 1080P. It's a little rough around the edges and some of the grading I still need to figure out. I'm planning some more of these edits in and around Portsmouth in the next few months, hoping to experiment some more.

P.S. What with this being hi-res HD, you can click HERE to watch it in HD and with the full screen option and it still looks crisp! Technology these days, eh?

Continuing on with the summer Southwold photos, these were taken down at the river harbour which is lined with small, black fishing huts in various states of decay. I have been down here on previous winter visits and the quayside is normally very quiet but in the summer it is packed out with people. The 'road' is really a gravel track one car wide and full of holes plus what with all the people I had to hop off of my bike and walk but it meant I got to catch some of the detail.

In the summer months a local drives a vintage bus around the town shuttling visitors and locals to all the different points of Southwold. I managed to quickly get my camera out just as the bus was passing.

This time of year once again makes me think of the 2008 trip to San Francisco. I published loads of the photos from that trip in the 'Shoreline Was Just a Ghost' book a while back but there were some photos that didn't make it in, so I thought I would post some from the book and some outtakes on Forever Circling in the next few weeks.

These first photos are from an afternoon down at the beach edge of Golden Gate Park, under the gaze of the Dutch Windmill. We drank sly drinks on the sand before skating the sandy concrete at a road junction. As always, looking at the photos makes me want to return.

In Coastal Fission Part 1 are photos of Sizewell nuclear power station, located on the edge of Sizewell beach. The power stations also extend out in to the sea via a rig like structure and an outlet pipe. The pipe I assume vents out warm water from the steam generation part of the cycle. The warm water promotes the growth of plants and small creatures, which attracts fish, which attracts birds. A cycle in itself too.

Walking down from Dell Quay to Chichester Marina some of the harbour coastline route is sadly not possible along the beach, even when the tide is low. You walk up on to the footpath that lies behind the many trees that overhang the beach. From up there I could watch the lone paddling of someone in a canoe (or kayak, I can never remember which is which). Being out alone on the water must be rather wonderful.

Just outside Newhaven the landscape is very hilly and with the low fog much of the hilltops were lost in the sky. One hill in particular was almost completely cloaked and at first glance nigh on invisible. Reminded me of John Carpenter's The Fog how fast in crept inland. No idea if there is a radio station in a lighthouse near here.
