When does a lack of rain become a drought? The last month or so has seen very little rain on the south coast which is evident with the brown grass on Southsea Common and the dry earth around the edge of Chichester Harbour when the tide drops. Despite many plants suffering (including my own garden) some are adaptable to these conditions. In Itchenor on the southern edge of Chichester Harbour the mud flats are home to large swaths of Limonium, also known as Sea Lavender. On the dry, ploughed but unseeded edge of the field next to the water the very rare Shepherd's Needle grows. This plant only grows in dry, broken earth conditions and is only found in 7 tetrads (4 square kilometers) in the UK.

Despite the lack of rain we haven't been short of wind and as such many boats have been out enjoying full sails and open water.

After the busy last few weeks I've finally had a chance to go back through months and months of photos all of which have sat on my laptop or in a drawer. Some of these photos have been taken recently and some go back as far as last autumn! Time to get some of those older photos up here, mixed up with new photo posts.

This set of photos are the second part from a day I spent out with my camera up in Suffolk over the Christmas period, Boxing Day to be precise. The day started off leaving Southwold and visiting the small village of Uggeshall (you can see the photos here) and I then drove up to Beccles, a beautiful little town on the river. The day had a clear blue sky for much of it but it was during that time when it was very, very cold...so cold that the river had frozen over and swans were walking from one side to the other! I walked around the boats and through to the far side of the water before having to quickly (as much as you can on icy paths) walk back to the warm car. From here I drove over to Lowestoft.

During my first visit to Aldeburgh I loved exploring around the fishing boats, in particular the old wooden ones, which seem to be in groups, with some red, some blue, etc. I loved the boats and how they sit one the empty beach looking out to sea so much they inspired my second visit, which was to photograph the boats for prints for my Dad's 60th Birthday present.

This most recent visit to Aldeburgh meant I got have another explore around the wood, pebbles, nets, anchors and crab/lobster pots and it is as interesting as my very first visit. Love this beach. Looking forward to returning again.

Although I've been exploring the coastline of Chichester Harbour for some time it was only last summer I first went out on a boat on the harbour itself, for the first time able to connect locations, places, distances, villages and channels. I caught a trip out on the Chichester Harbour solar boat, which silently and smoothly traverses from Emsworth out to Langstone and back again.

It seems obvious but it is really only from the perspective of being on the water looking out that the mental geographical map really took shape in my head visually. The scale of the harbour itself also begins to take on context, even the curvature of the earth adds a new layer, masts in the harbour entrance and channel markers slipping past the hazy summer horizon.

As well as the quayside and the working fishing boats and fish markets The Camber is also permanent and temporary home to pleasure craft in all different states of repair as well as a stack of small ribs and boats. Most of the time I had to look through the fence to get a good look or angle, with the light being bounced around by chrome and water.

In the end I shot one roll of 36 film during the one hour walk, I think it went some way in capturing the feel of The Camber on that sunny, bright but chilly Saturday morning.

Emsworth is the largest village located on Chichester Harbour and is always perfect for a walk and an explore. As you walk down the hill from the shops and pubs you descend to the small basin on the edge of the largest millpond and the busiest spot in the village when it comes to boats and sailing. If you're lucky you'll spot the famous Sid who has been working for the harbour since he was a boy.

The story goes that Emsworth has, or had, the most pubs per person ratio in the UK. Talking about the pubs makes me hungry and want to visit the Sussex Brewery for sausages and mash. Can you have sausages and mash for breakfast? Is that legal?

When I first moved to Portsmouth back in 1995 I lived in the student halls just off Locksway Road and I've always been really interested in the old canal, which is now all but erased from the map. After walking south past the halls I watched the wader birds feeding between the circles of ice and boats covered in snow. From there it was a short walk to the boat club and the old canal lock. The last remains of the canal are the sea lock walls, that are now home to a small marina of little boats. Within the lock the ice was thick and jostled in the water with the hulls.

Over the little bridge and on to the shore beach I was back at the wreak of an old boat, something I've taken photos of many times. The wreak is submerged during high tide and is slowly being eaten away. Due to luck more than timing the hull skeleton was under a layer of snow, the water left from the last tide a layer of ice.

These are the last photos from the summer Southwold trip (you might be relieved to hear) and were taken on my first morning there. The morning weather was incredible so I rode my bike directly out to the beach and spent some time lamenting about how rough the sea was, which scuppered my plans on swimming. As it was midweek the beach and sea were almost deserted so I spent plenty of time beachcombing, sadly not finding any amber, but luckily not stepping on the sharp and rusty metal in the water.

Looking through all the photos I've taken over the last few months everything is coastal. Too much? I need to go out and mix it up.

Way back in January 2009 I walked the Blyth river up to where it joined the North Sea, the weather that day was a brutal rain storm with howling winds. Back in the summer of this year I walked some of the same route but this time in the warm sunshine and ended up at the concrete piers where the river entrance meets the North Sea. The concrete pier on the Walberswick side has been slowly disintegrating for a quite a while but is due to be rebuilt very soon. In a way, it's a shame.

Despite the warm weather and still river the North Sea was still agitated, like in the winter, and crashed in to the piers and the change can be seen where the river and sea meet.
