This summer has somehow conspired with work and weather so that I never quite managed to get out and do as much as I wanted with my camera. Too many things got in the way. Unlike springtime though, a time from which I have many photos to finally share both here and on Quiet Corners.

My job has changed significantly in the last 12 months and rather than working from home I'm now out travelling around the south coast more for both work and meetings. I tend to try and be very prompt for meetings but inevitably play it safe a little too much and turn up about an hour early...which has it's advantages...principally that I can go for a walk and explore. One such exploration was around Littlehampton seafront which I hadn't been to in over a decade or more. The beach is wide with soft sand when the tide is low and at this time of the year (just before the sun broke free) quiet of both people and activity.

After the busy last few weeks I've finally had a chance to go back through months and months of photos all of which have sat on my laptop or in a drawer. Some of these photos have been taken recently and some go back as far as last autumn! Time to get some of those older photos up here, mixed up with new photo posts.

This set of photos are the second part from a day I spent out with my camera up in Suffolk over the Christmas period, Boxing Day to be precise. The day started off leaving Southwold and visiting the small village of Uggeshall (you can see the photos here) and I then drove up to Beccles, a beautiful little town on the river. The day had a clear blue sky for much of it but it was during that time when it was very, very cold...so cold that the river had frozen over and swans were walking from one side to the other! I walked around the boats and through to the far side of the water before having to quickly (as much as you can on icy paths) walk back to the warm car. From here I drove over to Lowestoft.

I had been off the island a little while back and driving back to the Southsea seafront I could see the fog approaching so stopped off and took some photos of wooden remains of some kind of pier or mooring structure just on the beach. On the point lies a single, huge wind turbine windmill that as well as drawing the eye in the local area the low oscillating swoosh of the blades also provides a constant aural backdrop.

I filmed this the other evening and I tried getting different views of the blades as the sun quickly fell but it was so cold my hands (and consequentially the camera) kept on shaking. Brrr. The photos from the docks and pier walk and a second video edit to follow.

When I first moved to Portsmouth back in 1995 I lived in the student halls just off Locksway Road and I've always been really interested in the old canal, which is now all but erased from the map. After walking south past the halls I watched the wader birds feeding between the circles of ice and boats covered in snow. From there it was a short walk to the boat club and the old canal lock. The last remains of the canal are the sea lock walls, that are now home to a small marina of little boats. Within the lock the ice was thick and jostled in the water with the hulls.

Over the little bridge and on to the shore beach I was back at the wreak of an old boat, something I've taken photos of many times. The wreak is submerged during high tide and is slowly being eaten away. Due to luck more than timing the hull skeleton was under a layer of snow, the water left from the last tide a layer of ice.

I had a 15 minute break and the sun was shining and I had half of a roll of film left so I made the most of it for the little free time I had.

Whilst out looking over the sea I watched an old lady who herself was watching a young girl walking on the beach and taking photos. The lady seemed intrigued as to what and why the girl was doing what she was doing.

I've been borrowing a Canon 60D for the last few days and it's been fun shooting digital plus I've been filming a lot of HD with a 50mm 1.8 lens too (more on that soon). Last night I braved the skatepark in the cold and dark and took a few photos as the session wound down at the end. Amazing being able to gather enough light in the lens to capture a skate photo with no flash at night. Technology these days.

I'm still experimenting but going to have to invest soon, I think.
