In the autumn my girlfriend Jo and myself travelled up to the Suffolk coast to visit my parents and also for me to show some of my favourite coastal locations to Jo who had previously never visited this part of the UK. One of the first places we went to was Covehithe, possibly my favourite place to walk in the UK (so far). I have taken many photos of the church, cliffs and beach over the last two years and the four previous visits (you can see all the photos here) and it still inspires me to take more photos as the landscape and weather change every time.

We first explored the church within a church before walking along the road to the cliffs and then down to the remote beach between the sea and the broad. The wind was very strong and blowing inland resulting in sandblasting when walking in one direction. Walking backwards along a cliff edge is pretty scary. Once down on the beach the wind wasn't so bad and the sun really came out, highlighting the churning sea, the white bones of the salt trees and the wide sand haze beach. I'm always looking forward to my next visit.

I'm leaving this morning for a short holiday in Suffolk and Essex, I'm going to try and return to one of my favourite beaches, Covehithe. I've posted up loads of photos from Covehithe before (see them all here) and it is a place I'm sure I'll keep on returning to time and time again hoping to catch different perspectives on the cliffs, beach, sea and trees.

See you when I return.

I watched a repeat of the TV programme Coast the other day, it was the one covering the coastline from Norfolk all the way down to Dover. The episode covered the erosion of the cliffs along the Suffolk coastline, in particular around Southwold and it reminded me of my second visit to Covehythe, just a few miles north of Southwold itself. My first visit was in September 2009 and my friend Bryony and I cycled and walked along the cliff top paths to get down to the beach. I returned in February this year and was shocked to find that much of the paths we had walked were now long gone, fallen to the beach after dramatic coastal erosion over the winter months.

Living and spending time on the coast of East Anglia you are aware of the constant erosion but this was the first time I had personally witnessed just how fast this natural (and normally slow) process occurring. The shape of the coastline is changing with almost every tide and within a few decades dozens of metres of cliff and land are washed back to the sea.

During the winter months I visited Covehithe beach in Suffolk to experiment with my Holga filters on my Nikon FE2 35mm SLR. I tried out the colour filters on the cliffs (see here) and the prism filters on the beach (see here). I also had with me some soft focus filters too and shot a roll of film of the sea and waves, also tying in to a long term project of mine focusing on the sea horizon (details of that hopefully in the near future, it's almost finished).

I can't ever get bored of seeing the waves come in from the horizon, I have some photos of that from the recent visit to Hastings to add to Forever Circling soon too. Hope these aren't boring for you!

This road used to lead to houses many years ago, all of which have long crumbled and fallen to the beach and to the sea. If you beach-comb you can still find bricks and roof tiles worn round and smooth from the seawater and sand. With each year this road gets shorter and shorter, slowly creeping back to the medieval church and farm as the coastal erosion continues at Covehithe and all along the Suffolk and East Anglian coastline.

Down on the beach I tried out the various prism filters on my three different Nikon SLR lenses, all of them giving a refracted, repeated view of the dead salt tree, the beach and some dog walkers. Trying to focus with these is really, really difficult but if you look closely in each of the photos you can peel back the layers and find that focus in there somewhere. Maybe.

After spending 20 minutes viewing the world through these prisms I was a little disorientated, maybe a glimpse at what a compound eye structure sees (like a fly). Makes for a strange perspective of reality.

A little while back I discovered that my old Lomo Holga lens filters fitted on my Nikon lenses for my SLR. A few weeks back I was in Suffolk for a weekend and went up to Covehithe cliffs and beach for a walk and experimented with all of the different filters. These first ones were using the four colour filters taking photos of a salt dead tree on the cliff top. More experiments and photos from this walk in the next week or two. Looking forward to trying the filters with other subjects and situations, skateboarding in particular.

Just to clarify, these are all film, in-camera photos, not photoshopped.

I love empty beaches and whilst in Suffolk Bryony took me to Covehithe, a remote beach you approach from the cliff tops which separates a large lagoon and the North Sea. Spread over the beach were old trees and tree roots plus there were two trees in the sand that looked like they had succumbed to salt water. Out at sea, oil tankers were queued up pumping oil from one to another.

Oh, Bryony fell in the sea. Wish I had a photo of that.

Covehithe church on the Suffolk coast is one of those strange medieval churches where it was built for prestige motives, rather than practical ones. Originally the size of a small cathedral yet only serving a tiny village in the 1400s it was partially demolished in 1672 and a new edifice was built from the rubble, but the original bell tower was untouched, becoming a church within a church. Bryony and I went exploring the ruins and found spiral staircases that led down in to the earth and rubble and the once stained glass windows now were arched frames for the sky.
