I've walked Eastney beach on loads of occasions and posted photos on here from those walks a few times too but it was only recently I focused on the the old and worn wood and metal remains that are scattered along the waterline. The strong tide has left it's mark on many of these structures (some of which may well have been piers or groynes in the past) with worn wood and rusty metal. Some of the decay has made the item unrecognisable, leaving their original purpose a bit of a mystery. Some of the items have even taken on new forms, merging with stones and other things creating new and unique objects.

Despite all the previous visits Eastney beach still will draw me back, so much more to discover there as the tide and seasons have their influence over time.

Over the years I've made a bit of a habit of hunting out old film cameras in charity shops, at carboots, etc that are less than £5 and seeing if they work and how photos come out. I've had some duds (an amazing Nikon in particular) but I've also found some wonderful cameras that I still use regularly too. I've always been meaning to create a blog with a post for each camera including a photo of the camera itself, technical spec and then the photos from the roll of film shot with it. I must do it some day soon when I have the time.

Anyway, at my local carboot the other month I picked up a beautiful 1980s Konica Pop in green, just for this very purpose, I also got a roll of 2002 expired film in there too all for £5. Wanting to do something specific with this little compact I set off for a walk down by the old military radar testing station on Eastney beach the other day, shooting photos with this camera and my Nikon FE2 to hopefully see how the litte Konica performs. When I got the photos back I was more than a little surprised how well the Pop functioned. I've pulled together 24 photos from the roll as a submission for Your Twenty Four, a regular photo feature on Strong Island where you shoot up to 24 photos in up to 24 hours in Portsmouth, these are the photos.

I'll get around to setting up this new blog some day soon, only downside is the finding a home for the ever expanding camera collection.

Over the last few weeks I've been cycling down to the almost empty beach on Saturday mornings to go swimming in the sea, which whilst not warm is not too bad once you are in and the sun is shining. The other week the coastguard helicopter was practising rescue runs down by the harbour entrance using a yacht to winch down and up from. The hazy sunlight and still sea made for pretty good conditions for that and for the swimming (plus loads of floating around).

At the most easterly point of Eastney beach is Fort Cumberland, built in the mid 16th century to protect the entrance to Langstone Harbour. Over the years it's use has changed many time, most recently it was a test station for the navy before becoming a scheduled monument and home to archaeologists. Behind the wire still lies strange lights and the rusted remains of radar test equipment and the main test tower. At certain times during the year they open the place to the public so you can see the old brick fort and artillery fortifications, I really need to go next time.

I also really need to fix my Smena 8M camera so it doesn't scratch the film.
