With sandy shoes and shells in our pockets we hopped back on the ferry across the harbour and back to Sandbanks. Back in the car we slowly drove around looking at the huge houses behind the walls and gates until we made it to the thin strip of land that connects the spur of land to the mainlands. The inside edge is straight to the deeper harbour water but the outside edge is lined with golden sand and concrete and rock outcrops.

Out in the deeper water fog was settling in over the distant Isle of Wight, giving it an Avalon feel.

Earlier this year Jo and I ventured down to Poole Harbour to explore Sandbanks, the local home of the rich and famous and also the sandy outcrop of land that helps form the harbour entrance with Swanage and Shell Bay Beach. We had a quick look around when we first arrived, exploring the harbour entrance and seeing just how much it would be to catch the ferry over to Shell Bay beach on the other side. By chance someone had left some money in the ticket machine so we took it as a sign and got our tickets and made our way over.

Shell Bay Beach is a large and empty swath of sand and dune with a wide horizon. We explored the creek, the lake called 'Little Sea' and hunted for razor clam shells in the sand. I can't begin to say how wonderful this beach is, really recommend it if you are passing by.

Portsmouth's hovercraft is a familiar and, for me, a much loved sight and sound on the Southsea seafront. I first travelled on it to Ryde back in the 90s and it was a strange and unique experience, as I imagined it would be. The service was the first in the world in the 1960s, the longest running service internationally and now, sadly, the last hovercraft service running in the UK. Anyone in the area around Clarence Pier during the day can't help but have their attention drawn to the sound of the engines and prop blades as the hovercraft comes in and out of The Solent.

Over on Strong Island I have a running series of posts on Portsmouth public transportation over the years (which I need to continue with), if you are interested in finding out more about the hovercraft you could start there or hit up good old Google, of course.

We walked down to and along the river before getting the ferry over for pub lunch and drinks on the quayside of Hamble village. The weather was amazing and getting the cold river water spray up from the ferry boat was perfect on a hot sunny day.

Now all the more motivated to learn how to sail after seeing all the river traffic, yachts leaving and arriving from the Solent.

The last part of the Hayling cycle ride ended up back where it began, at the ferry that connects Portsmouth to Hayling. During the winter the Ferry is really quiet so you can spend some time at the quay waiting for the ferry to leave and watch the beachcombers, yachts and sea birds go by. On the ferry journey out to Hayling a heavy rainstorm was just south in the Solent, thankfully it never made landfall otherwise the photos from this trip would have just have been from in the pub...

All summer I've been cycling the seafront regularly and many times I'll end up at a place called 'The Point' which juts in to the harbour and has pubs dating back hundreds of years. It's hard to beat a pint sitting there taking in the harbour in the evening.

Sunday sees the second Strong Island bike ride and we'll be ending up here too, looking forward to it.

Another one bites the dust and hits thirty, this time it was Jill. We went over to Hayling Island by ferry to the great little pub that sits on the beach overlooking the harbour entrance. Oh yeah, £2 a pint. I wish I took more photos. Anyway, Happy 30th, Jill.

Not sure about the light leaks, I think the film wasn't loaded right. I kinda like it, I guess.
