Long before there was a bridge connecting Langstone on the mainland and Hayling Island boats used to drop off and pick up shingle and other goods from the quayside and to travel to Hayling you had to navigate the old causeway. The causeway travels out across the channel connecting Chichester Harbour and Langstone Harbour and used to be only accessible at low tide. Back when a canal boat route was being built through to Portsmouth (which cut in to Portsea Island at Milton) the channel was deepened and now sadly the old causeway is no longer in use, but is still visible and still marked at the Langstone end.

P.S. The Royal Oak Pub on the Langstone quayside is one of my all time favourite pubs, hard to beat drinking with your feet hanging over the quay wall and watching the tide and boats in the sunshine.

The last part of the Hayling cycle ride ended up back where it began, at the ferry that connects Portsmouth to Hayling. During the winter the Ferry is really quiet so you can spend some time at the quay waiting for the ferry to leave and watch the beachcombers, yachts and sea birds go by. On the ferry journey out to Hayling a heavy rainstorm was just south in the Solent, thankfully it never made landfall otherwise the photos from this trip would have just have been from in the pub...
