I do love going out first thing in the morning with my camera and catching the beach and sea as the sun comes up, even in winter. You can't beat an empty beach. Last weekend I borrowed a Canon 60D with a 50mm lens from a friend and decided to do something different and film some HD footage. Filming with digital SLRs in the last year or so has become very popular as you can use still camera lenses to get some interesting effects like very short depth of field, particularly with manual focus. Over this last year as part of my new job I've been learning more and more about film and production so it was also good to try out some filming techniques like focus pulls and throws and follow focus, all relatively easy to experiment with a D-SLR.

This first dawn observations edit is made up from my walk around and under South Parade Pier in Southsea and was shot in 1080P. It's a little rough around the edges and some of the grading I still need to figure out. I'm planning some more of these edits in and around Portsmouth in the next few months, hoping to experiment some more.

P.S. What with this being hi-res HD, you can click HERE to watch it in HD and with the full screen option and it still looks crisp! Technology these days, eh?

On an early morning bike ride in Southsea a few months ago I ended up at the harbour and had a look around Johnson's fish wholesalers who were kind enough to welcome me in to take photos of them at work. All sorts of fish and shellfish are available (you can even look at the live lobsters and giant crab in their tanks) and the guys working there were really knowledgeable, even going though every fresh fish and telling me where it was caught, much of it local to Portsmouth and the surround area. I grabbed some fresh cod fillet to grill for my lunch (cheap too) and said my thank yous and goodbyes.

I start a new job in January and I've been figuring out if I could cycle to the studio or not so I thought a test ride early in the morning would be a good idea. The cat woke me up just before 6 on Saturday morning and whilst it was still dark I went out with my little digi camera and cycled the 8 or so miles off the island and up past the harbour, as the autumn sun rose.

Apart from my toes getting frozen in the cold air it was a really nice ride and one I'm looking forward to doing on the regular.

Continuing my 6am bike ride, after the taking photos on the beach, I cycled along the length of Southsea to Old Portsmouth and explored the fishing boats and market. I saw this lone swan (which always makes me sad, they pair for life, where is it's mate?) swimming in the calm harbour water, seemed to be enjoying the quiet Saturday morning before the day picked up pace.
