I was talking to my girlfriend Jo about our trips to Southwold in Suffolk, I think we have been 3 times but I get the events on the trips mixed up so have to look at my photos to remember sometimes. While looking for a photo of a bike ride I found a few photos from the second trip that I never put up. These photos date the trip perfectly, the bunting is due to the royal wedding which happened the day I took the photos. These bring back some very fond memories. Particularly of The Nelson.

Now we really want to go back again...

Portsmouth's hovercraft is a familiar and, for me, a much loved sight and sound on the Southsea seafront. I first travelled on it to Ryde back in the 90s and it was a strange and unique experience, as I imagined it would be. The service was the first in the world in the 1960s, the longest running service internationally and now, sadly, the last hovercraft service running in the UK. Anyone in the area around Clarence Pier during the day can't help but have their attention drawn to the sound of the engines and prop blades as the hovercraft comes in and out of The Solent.

Over on Strong Island I have a running series of posts on Portsmouth public transportation over the years (which I need to continue with), if you are interested in finding out more about the hovercraft you could start there or hit up good old Google, of course.

I do love going out first thing in the morning with my camera and catching the beach and sea as the sun comes up, even in winter. You can't beat an empty beach. Last weekend I borrowed a Canon 60D with a 50mm lens from a friend and decided to do something different and film some HD footage. Filming with digital SLRs in the last year or so has become very popular as you can use still camera lenses to get some interesting effects like very short depth of field, particularly with manual focus. Over this last year as part of my new job I've been learning more and more about film and production so it was also good to try out some filming techniques like focus pulls and throws and follow focus, all relatively easy to experiment with a D-SLR.

This first dawn observations edit is made up from my walk around and under South Parade Pier in Southsea and was shot in 1080P. It's a little rough around the edges and some of the grading I still need to figure out. I'm planning some more of these edits in and around Portsmouth in the next few months, hoping to experiment some more.

P.S. What with this being hi-res HD, you can click HERE to watch it in HD and with the full screen option and it still looks crisp! Technology these days, eh?

Despite working in Worthing on a few occasions I hadn't explored along the beach or the pier up until I was working in The Dome Cinema, which overlooks the sea and promenade. I had a 15 minute break and the sun was shining and I had half of a roll of film left so I made the most of it for the little free time I had.

Whilst out looking over the sea I watched an old lady who herself was watching a young girl walking on the beach and taking photos. The lady seemed intrigued as to what and why the girl was doing what she was doing.

A must visit when visiting Southwold is the town's old pier. The vintage structure juts out in to the sea and gives a beautiful view of Southwold itself and of the distinctive and colourful beach huts lining the beaches. From the end of the pier you also have a great view north and south along the coast and also out to the sea horizon, which is populated by both yachts and heavy commercial shipping.

The pier is famous for it's unique end of the pier games which have been designed by an artist for more than 20 years but I personally like how the concrete pillars at the end are covered with coins. I guess it is lucky to throw a coin out to the pillar and for it to not fall off in to the sea. Make a wish.

Way back in January 2009 I walked the Blyth river up to where it joined the North Sea, the weather that day was a brutal rain storm with howling winds. Back in the summer of this year I walked some of the same route but this time in the warm sunshine and ended up at the concrete piers where the river entrance meets the North Sea. The concrete pier on the Walberswick side has been slowly disintegrating for a quite a while but is due to be rebuilt very soon. In a way, it's a shame.

Despite the warm weather and still river the North Sea was still agitated, like in the winter, and crashed in to the piers and the change can be seen where the river and sea meet.

This morning saw the sad news that Hastings Pier has been destroyed by fire. As far back as January I have been visiting Hastings for work and have passed the pier many times and despite it being run down, closed and needing repair it still was quite the landmark.

Sometime back when spring was trying to wrestle the weather from winter I was in Hastings on a very foggy Sunday and spent a few hours walking on the beach. As I walked the tide slowly slipped out in to the cover of the fog and hidden horizon and in reverse the pier slowly appeared as I walked closer and closer. I was able to explore under the pier on the sand and in the low water for some time before leaving and up until today nearly all of the photos from that day have sat unseen and forgotten.

After hearing about the fire I dug the pier stills out, it seems a little strange thinking about how such a historical local landmark is now just a skeleton, just like in Brighton. It also reminds me how close Southsea has been to losing it's pier over the years too. Not to mention the number of times Southend's pier has been on fire. Strange considering how they are all so closely related to water.
