I haven't been riding my bike recently as much as I did last year (for all sorts of reasons) but last week I decided to go down to the seafront and cycle along the beach to catch the last of the evening light. Just down from the pier is the old, concrete submarine barrier that I have photographed before but caught my eye as I was passing. With the tide low you could see all of the blocks and the sand on the beach. I had the left overs of a roll of film in the camera so I used that up capturing that spot at that time of the evening.

I was really pleased with the pier photo, I held that at ground level with no idea how it was composed, hoping for it to be level, which never normally works. Somehow it worked out.

This second half of digital photos taken on the Circumference bike ride are from halfway around the island, Hilsea Lines, then all the way back to the pier at Southsea. Once I made it back I set up camp on the empty beach and pulled out of my rucksack my home developing kit and chemicals. It took a while loading the roll of film on to a spool and then place it in to the canister but after that the process went pretty smoothly. One thing that had concerned me about this was that I needed warm water for the developer. To get around this I put very hot water in to a sealable cup and wrapped it up in an old wool hat before putting it in my rucksack before setting off. It was only once I finished the ride I realised how long I had been and worried it had gone cold, luckily it was exactly 20 degrees when I poured it out, amazing!

With the develop, stop and fix parts of the process complete I had to finish the film developing with the wash. I researched previously how to incorporate seawater in to this project and it seemed seawater was often used to wash film back in the day by photographers on boats and ships. The process requires lots of water so it was more sensible to use the abundant brine rather than the precious fresh water on board. For me, I wanted to tie in to the physical images, via their development, something from the physical environment so the use of seawater was perfect (plus it meant i didn't have to cycle miles with litres and litres of water on my back). With the film washed (and my feet wet) I had to then remove the negatives and dry them. I didn't realise how this could be difficult on the beach with nothing to hang them from, luckily it was sunny and very windy! In no time they were dry and I was ready to go home to scan them.

Once home I scanned the negatives and put them together in to the final piece of work to go in to the Strong Island Exhibition. Considering the salt and sand getting in to the process there was very little damage and scratches and for my first in-situ developing I think it went pretty well. Will do this again sometime.

It's been a really busy few weeks with work plus helping out with The Strong Island Exhibition at The Round Tower in Old Portsmouth, which I had a piece of work planned for some time but only managed to create last week (last minute .com as usual). The piece I had in mind was more about concept and process that the final image, something I haven't really focused on before. The general theme for the exhibition was Strong Island so I wanted to focus on the circumference of the island with the sea as a natural border and defence plus identify some key locations around it's edge.

I've ridden on my bike around the island on many occasions so I formulated a plan where I could, in theory, pack my home film development kit in to my bag, shoot a roll of film whilst cycling the island's edge and then develop the roll of film at the end, on the beach. I also wanted to physically connect the process, the environment and the image so I researched in to how to incorporate seawater in to the development chemical process.

I hadn't developed film away from my kitchen sink before and certainly hadn't used seawater so you could say I was taking a bit of a risk when I set off from the end of South Parade Pier last Monday morning. When I returned 4 hours later (I didn't appreciate how much extra time would be required for all the photo stops) I was tired but excited to find out just how things might work out. Find out in part 2!

Last saturday I took out my old Petra 7S rangefinder camera with me on an around Portsmouth/Portsea Island bike ride. Rather than my usual route I allowed myself to both stop off at points and also go exploring, particularly around the Hilsea Lines along the northern edge of the island. I wanted to experiment with the camera by blurring the lens and to try and capture the low morning light and colours from a clear winter's day. Hoping for a more dream-like view.

On an early morning bike ride in Southsea a few months ago I ended up at the harbour and had a look around Johnson's fish wholesalers who were kind enough to welcome me in to take photos of them at work. All sorts of fish and shellfish are available (you can even look at the live lobsters and giant crab in their tanks) and the guys working there were really knowledgeable, even going though every fresh fish and telling me where it was caught, much of it local to Portsmouth and the surround area. I grabbed some fresh cod fillet to grill for my lunch (cheap too) and said my thank yous and goodbyes.
