These are the last of the snow photos. Despite being cold, tired and with slightly wet feet I really enjoyed the quiet of walking to and around a different part of Portsmouth I hadn't experienced before under snow.

The last part of the walk was back from the canal lock in Milton, through the park and back to my street. I love the black branches outlined with a layer of snow.

When I first moved to Portsmouth back in 1995 I lived in the student halls just off Locksway Road and I've always been really interested in the old canal, which is now all but erased from the map. After walking south past the halls I watched the wader birds feeding between the circles of ice and boats covered in snow. From there it was a short walk to the boat club and the old canal lock. The last remains of the canal are the sea lock walls, that are now home to a small marina of little boats. Within the lock the ice was thick and jostled in the water with the hulls.

Over the little bridge and on to the shore beach I was back at the wreak of an old boat, something I've taken photos of many times. The wreak is submerged during high tide and is slowly being eaten away. Due to luck more than timing the hull skeleton was under a layer of snow, the water left from the last tide a layer of ice.

Walking through untouched snow up to the edge of the harbour I could begin to hear a lot of geese, as I got to the waterside I could see a large flock of Brent Geese had taken a corner of the harbour and grouped together to swim facing in to the strong wind.

I walked back along the beach and past the new People's Memorial, the flags visible from the road. Further south through Milton Common the small lakes were covered with ice and it was only as I started to get to the boats and far side of the marina did I begin to see many more people also walking through the snow and ice.

Leaving the graveyard I walked up the eastern road that cuts north on the eastern side of Portsmouth. The road leaves the built up Milton and runs up the side of Milton Common before meeting the harbour edge. I walked along the footpath but the snow on the common ground was up to two feet deep...as I found out when taking photos.

Just before getting to the harbour I spotted a group of five trees in untouched snow, with the line of the harbour behind. I think this is my favourite photos taken that day.

Last Thursday everyone in Portsmouth woke to the quiet created by the fall of a deep blanket of snow. Indirectly, the quiet stems from a city struggling to function, people aren't walking to work and cars are left asleep under their white duvets. Just like with human extremities, the capillaries away from the central veins close down, only the main road become passable and even those a struggle.

I left my house at 8am and wanted to try and see a different side of the city than just the (naturally beautiful) seafront, like I did in the last heavy snowfall. Wanted to see the snow in the quieter places. I started walking north and went up to Fratton Park, the home of Portsmouth football club. The ground is surrounded by a large carpark and then back alleyways, always freshly coated with paint and artwork.

P.S. Can you spot the unexpected rainbow of colour? Snowy days are so naturally monochrome.

I finally got some old reels of super8 film developed the other day so all this week will be little clips and edits, rather than photos. I've always felt super8 is as close a cousin to photography as it is video, more of a collection of moving film stills with the same characteristics as film photography (Kodak 64T is in itself available as both still camera film and as super8 reels).

This first little edit is from a few years ago, when we had a relatively heavy day of snow. Nothing like what we had recently though. Poor old pigeons...

Back when the snow fell I shot two rolls of colour film, one 35mm and one medium format, and I only recently got them developed, long after the snow iced and then melted away. These first ones are of the birds sheltering together on wires. They seemed to genuinely be keeping close together to brave the cold air and snowflakes, I guess like everyone else was at the time.

It's relatively unusual for Southsea to get much snow, last year it was only an inch or two, but earlier this week Southsea got covered in a heavy white blanket. During the snowfall I walked down to the seafront to go see the sea and walk down to the pier. When I got to the pier I put in a roll of B&W film which I then developed once I got home. From the pier itself the Solent was a white out with the forts and the Isle of Wight almost invisible.
