I haven't been riding my bike recently as much as I did last year (for all sorts of reasons) but last week I decided to go down to the seafront and cycle along the beach to catch the last of the evening light. Just down from the pier is the old, concrete submarine barrier that I have photographed before but caught my eye as I was passing. With the tide low you could see all of the blocks and the sand on the beach. I had the left overs of a roll of film in the camera so I used that up capturing that spot at that time of the evening.

I was really pleased with the pier photo, I held that at ground level with no idea how it was composed, hoping for it to be level, which never normally works. Somehow it worked out.

Over the years I've made a bit of a habit of hunting out old film cameras in charity shops, at carboots, etc that are less than £5 and seeing if they work and how photos come out. I've had some duds (an amazing Nikon in particular) but I've also found some wonderful cameras that I still use regularly too. I've always been meaning to create a blog with a post for each camera including a photo of the camera itself, technical spec and then the photos from the roll of film shot with it. I must do it some day soon when I have the time.

Anyway, at my local carboot the other month I picked up a beautiful 1980s Konica Pop in green, just for this very purpose, I also got a roll of 2002 expired film in there too all for £5. Wanting to do something specific with this little compact I set off for a walk down by the old military radar testing station on Eastney beach the other day, shooting photos with this camera and my Nikon FE2 to hopefully see how the litte Konica performs. When I got the photos back I was more than a little surprised how well the Pop functioned. I've pulled together 24 photos from the roll as a submission for Your Twenty Four, a regular photo feature on Strong Island where you shoot up to 24 photos in up to 24 hours in Portsmouth, these are the photos.

I'll get around to setting up this new blog some day soon, only downside is the finding a home for the ever expanding camera collection.

Portsmouth's hovercraft is a familiar and, for me, a much loved sight and sound on the Southsea seafront. I first travelled on it to Ryde back in the 90s and it was a strange and unique experience, as I imagined it would be. The service was the first in the world in the 1960s, the longest running service internationally and now, sadly, the last hovercraft service running in the UK. Anyone in the area around Clarence Pier during the day can't help but have their attention drawn to the sound of the engines and prop blades as the hovercraft comes in and out of The Solent.

Over on Strong Island I have a running series of posts on Portsmouth public transportation over the years (which I need to continue with), if you are interested in finding out more about the hovercraft you could start there or hit up good old Google, of course.

I had been off the island a little while back and driving back to the Southsea seafront I could see the fog approaching so stopped off and took some photos of wooden remains of some kind of pier or mooring structure just on the beach. The tide was low which revealed the base of the structure covered in seaweed, the seagulls sat on the piles, watching me creep around trying to take their photos.

I do love going out first thing in the morning with my camera and catching the beach and sea as the sun comes up, even in winter. You can't beat an empty beach. Last weekend I borrowed a Canon 60D with a 50mm lens from a friend and decided to do something different and film some HD footage. Filming with digital SLRs in the last year or so has become very popular as you can use still camera lenses to get some interesting effects like very short depth of field, particularly with manual focus. Over this last year as part of my new job I've been learning more and more about film and production so it was also good to try out some filming techniques like focus pulls and throws and follow focus, all relatively easy to experiment with a D-SLR.

This first dawn observations edit is made up from my walk around and under South Parade Pier in Southsea and was shot in 1080P. It's a little rough around the edges and some of the grading I still need to figure out. I'm planning some more of these edits in and around Portsmouth in the next few months, hoping to experiment some more.

P.S. What with this being hi-res HD, you can click HERE to watch it in HD and with the full screen option and it still looks crisp! Technology these days, eh?

I've been borrowing a Canon 60D for the last few days and it's been fun shooting digital plus I've been filming a lot of HD with a 50mm 1.8 lens too (more on that soon). Last night I braved the skatepark in the cold and dark and took a few photos as the session wound down at the end. Amazing being able to gather enough light in the lens to capture a skate photo with no flash at night. Technology these days.

I'm still experimenting but going to have to invest soon, I think.

You know I said about loads of updates for Forever Circling...yeah, sorry about that. Work has been really busy plus the laptop with loads of my new photos is being borrowed by someone. Anyway, enough of the excuses, on to the photos.

Southsea Common a little while ago received a new visitor, a huge dinosaur sculpture which instantly became a landmark of the city. The dinosaur is based on the Ultrasaurus, a creature mistakenly created when an archaeologist got a little confused and merged two skeletons in to one. The sculpture is soon to be moved to it's new home Colchester so I made sure I went down for a close look with my camera. It just so happened to be a rainy, grey day and despite me using a roll of colour film the sky and the creature's colour resulted in the photos being a nice form of black and white tones.

Going to miss this creature when he is gone.

Due to a little confusion on my part I unloaded a partially shot roll of film from my camera and then a little while later reloaded it but didn't wind it on past the already taken frames. Oops. The first frames were taken during a walk in Saltern Copse by Chichester Marina. After reloading the film was used during an evening bike ride around Southsea ending up in Old Portsmouth along the battlement walls and past the Cathedral.

I like to shoot multiple exposures intentionally but it was nice to see a set created by accident, from two totally different times and locations. It's a shame you can't sometimes plan happy accidents.

Over the last few weeks I've been cycling down to the almost empty beach on Saturday mornings to go swimming in the sea, which whilst not warm is not too bad once you are in and the sun is shining. The other week the coastguard helicopter was practising rescue runs down by the harbour entrance using a yacht to winch down and up from. The hazy sunlight and still sea made for pretty good conditions for that and for the swimming (plus loads of floating around).
