A little before Christmas Jo and I travelled over to Climping in Sussex, it is just south of Ford (where the prison riot happened), which is just south of Arundel. The first reason for visiting is the incredible Sunday roasts served at the Oystercatcher pub, the second is the quiet beach, located between busy Bognor and Littlehampton.

By the size of the car parks the beach can get quite busy in the summer but at this time of year the long stretch of stone and sandy beach was deserted, with the sun low and bright and the sea quiet and still. Nothing really gets better than beach walks in these conditions, particularly after a roast lunch.

A while back I cycled the width of Hayling Island exploring from the Langstone Harbour ferry quay, the waterways beyond, a burnt out house, the roller-coaster, the seafront beyond leading right up to the far easterly beach facing Chichester Harbour.

Past the fun fair marking the middle point of the southerly edge of Hayling Island are wide empty beaches and despite the strong winds that day the winter sun tried its best to break the clouds and warm as best it could the few walkers braving the weather.

I'll be posting up the photos from that bike ride over this week.

Liz and I went on a much shorter road trip the other weekend, we spent an afternoon exploring Selsey and Pagham Harbour, both just south of Chichester. East of Selsey are long shingle and shell beaches all the way up to the reed beds, woodland, mudflats and water of the harbour. As we walked all along the headland with the low sun there were dead thistles by the dozen, one of the many interesting things we found. More photos soon.
