In the autumn my girlfriend Jo and myself travelled up to the Suffolk coast to visit my parents and also for me to show some of my favourite coastal locations to Jo who had previously never visited this part of the UK. One of the first places we went to was Covehithe, possibly my favourite place to walk in the UK (so far). I have taken many photos of the church, cliffs and beach over the last two years and the four previous visits (you can see all the photos here) and it still inspires me to take more photos as the landscape and weather change every time.

We first explored the church within a church before walking along the road to the cliffs and then down to the remote beach between the sea and the broad. The wind was very strong and blowing inland resulting in sandblasting when walking in one direction. Walking backwards along a cliff edge is pretty scary. Once down on the beach the wind wasn't so bad and the sun really came out, highlighting the churning sea, the white bones of the salt trees and the wide sand haze beach. I'm always looking forward to my next visit.

The bright sunlight was reflected off of the lake surface and up to the underside of the tree leaves and with the breeze there was a strange wave strobe effect when looking up at the tree canopy.

Down on the beach I tried out the various prism filters on my three different Nikon SLR lenses, all of them giving a refracted, repeated view of the dead salt tree, the beach and some dog walkers. Trying to focus with these is really, really difficult but if you look closely in each of the photos you can peel back the layers and find that focus in there somewhere. Maybe.

After spending 20 minutes viewing the world through these prisms I was a little disorientated, maybe a glimpse at what a compound eye structure sees (like a fly). Makes for a strange perspective of reality.

A little while back I discovered that my old Lomo Holga lens filters fitted on my Nikon lenses for my SLR. A few weeks back I was in Suffolk for a weekend and went up to Covehithe cliffs and beach for a walk and experimented with all of the different filters. These first ones were using the four colour filters taking photos of a salt dead tree on the cliff top. More experiments and photos from this walk in the next week or two. Looking forward to trying the filters with other subjects and situations, skateboarding in particular.

Just to clarify, these are all film, in-camera photos, not photoshopped.

I love empty beaches and whilst in Suffolk Bryony took me to Covehithe, a remote beach you approach from the cliff tops which separates a large lagoon and the North Sea. Spread over the beach were old trees and tree roots plus there were two trees in the sand that looked like they had succumbed to salt water. Out at sea, oil tankers were queued up pumping oil from one to another.

Oh, Bryony fell in the sea. Wish I had a photo of that.
